Avra began in New York in 2000, on East 48th Street, from Nick Tsoulos, Nick Pashalis and Marc Packer, and a second Avra opened on 60th and Madison in 2016. Both became business-lunch fixtures. In April 2018 the partners brought it west, into the long-empty Hakkasan space on North Beverly Drive in the Golden Triangle, and spent seven months turning eleven thousand square feet into a Greek dining room.

Rockwell Group designed it: high ceilings with a skylight, flowing sculpted drapes, a 1,500-pound sculpture and living lemon trees among 240 seats. It is big and beige in the best Beverly Hills sense.

There is a market display of flown-in fish and seafood, and you choose your own and have it grilled.

The menu is modern Greek with the classics throughout, but the reason to go is the fish. There is a market display of flown-in fish and seafood, and you choose your own and have it grilled. Keep the order simple and let the room do the rest.

It takes a big table without blinking. This is the place to bring eight people at short notice and still look as if you planned it.
